That's the question which I want to answer to you in this blogpost. First of all I asked by myself how well known this term, shortened OOAK, really is. I think it's very well known in American English. I found out that in British English this term is known by "one off". I didn't know that until now. And what is exactly the meaning of it? I always have understood the meaning is that there is only one item of the design. And that is what I do; creating a different design each time. Below already a preview of different designs made of one kind of fabric: History In the very first blogpost I already told extensively that I have begun with creating jewelry. I repeat it shortly, so you don't have to read it completely. I already started my own webshop in 2005, named Sieraden Design Catena. I did that for years, and I also created jewelry for shops. One day I started a shop on Etsy, the American platform. Besides jewelry i started with the bags and step by step I stopped my first passion. Meanwhile I also began to upcycle jean jackets in for instance Ibiza style. Since the beginning of 2018 this webshop Catena Bags is online. The Etsy shop will end soon. The discovery But what this is all about is that I already realized with making jewelry that I mostly loved to design a new item each time. I had some well selling items of which I made a copy when it was sold but I didn't like that at all. One time I designed a line for a shop with the meaning of course to create more of one design. I soon discovered that it limited my creativity. When I designed something I always had to know that I had enough in stock or I could buy more of each material. I wasn't used to that, I normally used every part which was available, even the last leftover. This collection didn't become a huge success and I knew I only wanted to do one of a kind in the future. Only OOAK That's like it's going with the bags and the embellishing of jean jackets in boho or bohemian style. Each one is unique, there's no second one of it. That's what I really like to do; making the most unique combinations of fabrics, colors, patterns like flowers or for example Navajo style. These often are provided richly with several materials like fringe, pompons and patches. I normally don't buy much of one materials, but sometimes you have that great fabric which you can use endlessly. On the internet it's on Instagram or on Pinterest. This last one is just perfect to collect a lot of pictures which brings you to several ideas. Gradually my blog has got a kind of format in which I make at first a collage of the subject. A world opens up to you when you see all that stuff. Although, that's my experience. My creative spirit is working directly when I see that kind of designs. But what kind of embellishments am I talking about, are you thinking. Before I already wrote in one of my blog posts about patches which are attached on jeans. That's what often will de done, but also there will be painted on the denim or it is ripped and provided with other fabrics and stitching. But you also it is embroidered or decorated with trims, lace and fringe. To be shirt, you cannot imagine, some designs are very unique. As usually I've been working on a collage to give you an impression of the item I am talking about. Can you imagine? When you see this design again and again, that you're about to start crafting some creations. And yes, denim was already one of my favorite materials to use in my bags. So it wasn't a big step to add upcycling denim to my activities. Although I use old jeans in my bags and with the embellishing of the jackets I use new unworn items. I Decorate the jackets with fabric, trims and fringe, and try to get that most beautiful combination! And I really enjoy it, so there will be more design! You often see it mentioned in the content of fashion items, handbags and accessories. I wonder what is the origin of this. I began searching for it and also checked what is the modern form of this colourful style. I'll try to give you a good impression whit this blog post. Where do Gypsies come from? Stop!, wait a second: before I go further telling my story, I have to tell that they prefer to be called Roma (or Sinti), so from now on I will use this name. I was really surprised about their origin, the roots of the Roma turned to be in India. But as known they used to be Nomads, who live and travel in caravans and spread out all over. Through Iran the Roma travelled to Europe, where they first entered the Balkan. But later on they spread over many countries. There also live many Roma in the North and the South of America. CultureVery important in the culture of the Roma is entertainment. One of the most famous acts is the fortune teller at the fair. She looks in the crystal ball or reads your hand palm to predict the future. But don't forget the world famous music from artists as Django Reinhardt the jazz guitar player and the Rosenberg trio, a Dutch group of guitarists. They wanted to live a free life on the outskirts of Spain, the country where dictator Franco ruled. People came to the Island to dance, sing, eat and smoke weed. They started their own communities and lived their own ways. In the eighties the island changed and the dance music became very important. DJ's as Tiesto, Avicii, Armin van Buren and many others performed regularly on this dance Island. Nowadays it still is a party Island with many clubs and discotheques and is very famous with celebrities ​But the real hippies stayed! Hippie Ibiza styleAnd that is why the Ibiza style which is known by the multi colored clothes, bags and other accessories is so famous and known in all countries. At the end of the sixties and in the seventies the hippie and Flower Power style became a fashion trend worldwide. Bright colored fabrics, flowers in your hair, big bead necklaces and fringes typify this style. And because the hippies stand for freedom, the peace sign is very important. And not to forget: they travelled around in a hippie van. All these characteristics you recognize in ths style. I'm sure you know what I mean, but I made a mood board to give an overview.​Festivals​This cool style also is very popular on festivals. The historic Woodstock festival in 1969 was one of the first hippie festivals in the world. Nowadays the famous Coachella festival which is organized every year is the representative of the hippie Ibiza style. Take a look at Instagram and you'll see the most beautiful pictures of beautiful styled people. I found some for you. My inspiration​​Mostly when I write in my blog about places or countries, I've been there by my own and got the inspiration right there. But to be honest, I've never been to Ibiza! But I really am inspired by this style. Is it because I was born in the sixties and my mother crocheted a colored cardigan for me? That pair I made once for a custom order for a costume for a theatre production. That kind of orders are always very nice. People see on your site what you can make and ask for the possibilities for custom orders. But with this kind of small accessories I could make it with some pants of which quite small pieces were used. In these days i need a lot more pants! For bags you use biger pieces as you'll understand. People next to me know it yet: don't throw away your old jeans. And I prefer that very worn out pieces. The most beautiful rags are of that. But everything is welcome.​ I just wrote about how original is recycling jeans. The conclusion was that I am certainly not the only one! But what you don't see offten is that only a part of my bags cosist of old denim. Take a look and you will be convinced. My goal is always to be original in my designs.
